10 Easy Steps for Young Children to Make a Healthy Omelette

Cooking with your child is a fun way to spend quality time together. Cooking is a highly educational activity as well as it involves lessons in nutrition, math, science and literacy. It is important for children to learn self care skills, such as cooking, so that they have a repertoire of things that foster their independence, confidence and pride. Take advantage of spending time with your young child doing something that you have to do anyway, and make your job easier, by giving your older child the tools to help themselves!

Here are ten steps to helping your child make a low mess, healthy omelette. Note: This recipe is shown using a plastic sandwich bag. This is an option for a young child who would be unable to whip the egg mix ingredients. While you can save the bag and do the mixing, some may prefer to let the child have the whole experience in mixing it themselves with this alternative method. Reuse or recycle the bag!

How to Make the Omelette

1.) Assemble the ingredients.

For your younger child you will want to pre-cut the ingredients and have them available in small containers. For an older child you can oversee them using a knife to create their ingredients.

8.) Let them watch as their omelette cooks in the pan and cools on their plate.

9.) Let them set the table with knife, fork, plate, cup, napkin, etc. They will use their good table manners and practice using a knife and fork to cut as you both enjoy your child’s delicious accomplishment together!

10.) Clean up the mess together! Make sure to teach your child that clean up is an essential step in every activity.

Cooking is a great way for your child to show some independence, eat healthy, and feel proud about their accomplishment! Enjoy your time together making this fast and easy ten step omelette together.
